Blog Assignment #3: Video Game Addiction

What with computer games fascinates so many humans? Do they think that their lives are so boring that they must go into a virtual world? Is it really healthy?

It has to be something that catches so many humans. I personally do believe that it not is healthy to play too much computer games. It can lead to deteriorated social relations and health problems because it implies much sedentary and indoor life. Children who play very much can, for example, believe it is alright to fight to get what they want.

Yes, there are advantages with some computer games. There are games where the player is supposed to solve problems, which can increase your brain capacity. It can also be a way to get in contact with other with same interest and make new friends. I believe, though, that it is important to limit the playing and decide a maximum time of it. Parents should, definitely, make sure that their kids not play too much. The parents should also control what kind of games the kid plays; games with too much violence may be injurious. I believe that playing games too much can lead to an increase if violence among, for example, individuals with mental problems.

It probably is difficult to decide when the playing is taking too big part in your life, but a tip can be to ask people in the surrounding about their opinion. Do they think that you play too much is it a good idea to think over it. If you feel that your social life starting to get worse, and/or that you get health problems due to the playing can it be a sign of playing too much.

So, you who play much computer games, make sure that the playing isn’t taken over your life!

Naturally, too much gaming can ruin your health and social status. But many things can do that.

That parents shouldn't let their kids use the computer as they like is in my opinion a horrible idea. Telling the child 'you can't use the computer now' might be a good idea to some, but I'd rather propose that the parent do something with the child instead, or rather; do something with the whole family.

If you don't like that your kid plays so much games, fine, go show him/her something else. Don't just tell him/her what s/he can't do. Let the child do whatever he/she wants with the computer, just make sure s/he also understand that there's more to life.

I found one thing I'd like to comment on, but I'm sure it's just a regular error
"Parents should, definitely, make sure that their kids not play too much."

I suspect a 'do' is inserted somewhere?

Marie,

You talk much about the alleged effect computer games can have on children. Personally I don't agree with your opinons on the effect violence in games can have on the people playing it. I have enjoyed playing a great number of (very) violent games growing up, but despite this most people would not describe me as a violent person in any respect.

However, I do believe that too much playing, as in too many hours, can have very serious, negative effects on the one playing. So I'm of the same mind like yourself regarding putting a cap on the number of hours a child should be allowed to spend in front of a game. I would like to add, though, that I also agree with Mikael, who commented on your blog above, that it is better for parents to suggest other activities instead of just banning the kids from playing.

Thanks for a good blog entry, Marie!

Cheers,
Andreas
